M – Addiction Recovery Definitions

Maintenance Addiction: A substance or behavior that one chooses to continue to control, because it’s necessary, like food, or is very desirable, like an intimate relationship.

Medical Model: A model of addiction as a disease that is best treated by medical professionals.

Minimization: Seeing something or a situation as less significant than it actually is.

Mirroring: Matching or copying another’s behavior, non-verbally communicating with each other in the process.

Mirror Neurons: Is a neuron that fires when you act and when you observe the same action performed by another, “mirroring” the behavior of the other person, as though you were performing the action.

Model, Modeling: To watch someone’s behavior and practice acting the same way, until it become comfortable.

Mood-Altering, Psychoactive Substance: A substance or behavior that affects the brain, creating intense pleasure and changing one’s emotional state.

Motivation: The reasons you act the way they do. There are many factors such as your intensity of desire or need, reward value of the goal, and your or other’s expectations.

Multiple Disciplinary Approach: This is the name for a team treatment approach, which can include a psychiatrist, nurse, social worker, counselor, and other professional.
